AE-FUNAI DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND NIGERIAN LANGUAGES TURNS-OUT FIRST MASTER OF ARTS (MA) GRADUATE IN IGBO LANGUAGE

The Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, Faculty of Humanities, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has turned-out its pioneer Master of Arts (MA) graduate in Igbo language in the person of Owualah Dorathy Chibuzo.

While presenting her MA thesis titled “Influence of Globalization on Igbo Language and Culture: Perspective of Igbo Cultural Dressing” Owualah noted that the work was centered on the influence of globalisation on language and African culture:perspective of Igbo cultural dressing, adding that Igbo language and Igbo culture are closely intertwined.

She argued that Language plays a significant role in shaping and expressing culture, and that. globalisation is the process of advancing to a more interconnected world even as she stated that the outcome of globalisation, coupled with civilisation and modern dressing that have engulfed the world over, language use and cultural dressing especially that of the Igbo poeple has been neglected.

Owualah further averred that globalization with its emerging effects on Igbo language and cultural dressing has made it very hard in the usage of some specific terms, expressions and identification of the Igbo through their traditional dress among people of different cultural backgrounds.

The external examiner, Prof. B.M Mbah in his submission, commended the candidate for her resourcefulness and open-mindedness, which made her to make history as the first Masters graduate of the department

Earlier while presenting the candidate, Owualah to the PG panelists, the Head, Department of Linquistics and Nigerian Languages, Dr. Ifeoma Nweze congratulated the student for the efforts she had put-in in making her dreams a reality.

She also commended the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sunday Elom and the School of Postgraduate Studies for their unwavering support to the Department of Linguistics & Nigerian Languages which aided it to turn-out its first Masters graduate. She assured that the Department will continue to contribute its quota towards moving the university to greater heights.

The epoch-making oral project defense which held on 17th January, 2024 at the Centre for Educational Services (CES, Aguogboriga, Abakaliki was witnessed by the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Nwabueze Elom, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Dr. Benedict Nweke, External Examiner, Prof. B.M Mbah, Head of the Department, who doubled as the student’s supervisor, Dr. Ifeoma Nweze amongst others.
