The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) has selected a postgraduate student of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi state, Uchenna Miracle Ogbu, for the 2022 summer school scheduled for the United Kingdom.
Ogbu who is of the Department of Biology (with specialization in Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology), Faculty of Biological Sciences will be representing Nigeria at the event scheduled to run from 31st July to 8th August, 2022 at Leeds Trinity University, United Kingdom. A total of 40 young scholars from 15 different countries, including Nigeria, will be attending the event.
With the theme, “Sports and Regeneration: Driving Sustainability, Community and Wellbeing”, the week-long event is geared towards exploring such topics as Sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals, Good governance and Financial Sustainability within the sports sector. Other activities include workshops, cultural night, talent show, award night and a trip to the beautiful city of York.
While presenting the student to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom recently, the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Dr. Jonny Ogunji, who also doubles as the Director of Internationalization, Advancement and Global Ranking, noted that the ACU summer school is a cultural exchange and international networking event, which brings selected young scholars including final year undergraduate, Masters’ and PhD students across the Commonwealth nations with different academic backgrounds to discuss key issues of global relevance.
Continuing, Prof. Ogunji stated that the young scholars will be exposed to several developmental trainings and skill acquisition programmes as well as individual and groups tasks in line with the theme of the event, adding that the summer school also serves as an opportunity for young scholars to gain learning experience on new cultures and beliefs as they interact and network with scholars from different cultural and academic backgrounds.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elom commended the Directorate of Internationalization, Advancement and Global Ranking for its dogged efforts in linking the University to the outside world, and assured of his administration’s continued support in making sure that AE-FUNAI is globally-recognized for the quality of its academic activities. He also charged Ogbu to be a good ambassador of the University during the summer event.
