The Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ebonyi State Professor Sunday Elom has inaugurated the newly-elected executive of the Students’ Union Government of the University.

The inauguration ceremony which took place at the VC’s conference room on Tuesday, February 20th 2024, ushered in a new government after the expiration of the tenure of the 5th union’s executive.

While admonishing the students’ officials who were elected in a free, fair and transparent election, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his gratitude over the peaceful exercise which he attributed to the deployment of e-voting system for the election  and the  doggedness of the election committee members who worked hard to ensure a successful exercise, stressing that the e-voting system has come to stay in the university considering  its enormous benefits.

He commended the immediate past SUG executive for the passion they had for students in particular and the institution in general especially in fostering peace and order on campus.

Prof. Elom called on the new executive to always bear in mind that their position was a call to service, therefore, must take their duties seriously as their predecessors left a big shoe by their enormous work, which they are expected to replicate, sustain and possibly surpass.

He cautioned them against allowing the SUG activities to deprive them of their primary reason of being in the University, encouraging them to serve and uphold the dignity and core values of the university by recognizing that they are  men under  authority.

He maintained that as Vice-Chancellor, he would always insist on allowing students to choose their leaders and representatives, stressing that he had no preferred candidate, even as he assured  them of his administration’s unwavering support and commitment in ensuring that they were raised in a decent environment. He  added that cultism, insubordination and outside political interferences in the activities of the Union will not be tolerated in the University.

The Vice-Chancellor further urged the students’ leaders to imbibe the spirit of dialogue and shun any act of radicalism, and to  work in harmony with the Dean of Students’ Affairs in order to achieve their goals.

Delivering his valedictory speech, the immediate past president of the Students Union Government, Senator Wilson Umahi, thanked the University management for the  support availed them during their tenure, adding that leadership is characterized with love, passion and accountability which he made sure were not lacking during his tenure.

Com. Umahi enumerated their achievements within the short term in office, which among other things included creating a synergy with the Ikwo Youth leadership for peaceful co-existence between the students and the indigenes of the host community. He advised the incoming President to work hand-in-hand with the university authorities and ensure that peace is maintained on campus, even as he  pleaded with the management to look into some of the challenges facing the students

In his Inaugural speech, the new SUG president, Com. Eze Johnpaul Makuochukwu, a student of the Faculty of Social Sciences, noted that he was honoured to be the 6th President of the Students’ Union Government under the present dispensation, pledging his unwavering dedication, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the welfare and development of the institution.

He appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elom for his support towards the welfare of staff and students in the university, commending him for his laudable achievements within his 3 years in office.

He stated that his key priority as the students’ union leader is to strengthen the collaboration and partnership with the University management for collective advancement of the institution, adding that his administration is ready to tackle students’ issues especially in the area of cultism, security of lives and property on campus as well as consolidate on the existing projects laid down by his predecessors.

The newly-elected SUG executive includes: Eze Johnpaul Makuochukwu (President), Precious Uloma Nwachukwu (Vice President), Nwoye John Chidera (General Secrectary), Alex Peter Ndubuisi (Assitant General Secretary.), Igwe Jude Amba (Treasurer), Aiwerioghene Efosa Michael (Director of Health), Nnaoma Chukwuebuka Prosper (Director of socials), Nwankwo Polycarp Chigozie (Director of Sports), Okechukwu Ebuka Joseph (Dirctor of Transport), Ogbu Daniel Chigozie (Director of Welfare), Totty Daniel Chibueze (Director of Information, Ifeanyi Ike (Director of Academic Planning) and  Nwaeze Joseph Chetachukwu (Internal Auditor).

At the event, the Vice-Chancellor equally inaugurated the new members of the  SUG Judiciary and Legislature. They include:  Yahaya Emmanuel Gwaza (Judiciary),  Nwanja Chibuike (Judiciary), Opara Udochukwu Kingsley (Judiciary) and Nka Chidiebere Prince (Judiciary).

Members  of the legislature are : Okpani Marvelous Ezi (Senate), Kawah Precious Chimezie (Senate), Maduakolam Humphrey Emmanuel (Senate), Obaji Fredrick Oge (Senate), Umoke Samson Eyeke (Senate), Ekedigwe Solomon Chinweike (Senate), Okoroafor Jude Onyebuchi (Senate), Okoroakpa John Obinna (Senate), Ogwo Chukwubuikem Emmanuel (Senate), Owo Kosisochukwu (Senate), Nwankwo Uche Emmanuel (Senate), Chime Chukwuagoziem (Senate), Ihemanma Daniel Kamsicho (Senate), Ugwuanyi Nnaemeka Hillary (Senate), Didigu Bede Chukwunonso (Senate) and Okike Chukwu Onyekachi (Senate).

Highlight of the inauguration ceremony was the administration of oath of office on the new SUG executive and members of the legislature and Judiciary by the Head of the Legal Unit, Barr. Ogochukwo Onuorah.
