The University Library was established in 2012 shortly after the inception of the University in 2011. The Library ostensibly provides support services to the three cardinal foci of the University viz: teaching/learning, research and community services.
The primary mandates of the University Library are to:
- Ensure the development of a good collection of resources with high quality information sources.
- Ensure that the sources are relevant and always current and most importantly to largely impact on the University’s programmes.
- Efficiently manage the resources for the benefit of the University
- Provide adequate access to the collection and ensure maximum use of the information sources by the staff and students
- Adopt the application of information technology to all the library operations and establish full ICT driven library services.
- Establish and manage a robust electronic library on the platform of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
- Provide a conducive environment for research and learning purposes
- Provide extension services to the University community
Library Structure
The University Library as presently constituted is headed by the University Librarian. There are five Departments: Acquisitions and Gifts; Serials Management; Cataloguing and Book processing; Readers’ Services and the Library Systems Development Unit. The Acquisitions and Serials Management Departments are largely responsible for collection development (Books and Journals in print format only). Cataloguing Department catalogues and properly classifies the newly acquired resources. Readers’ Services Department handles users’ library programmes and activities e.g. borrowing, reference services, reserved book services etc and the Systems Development handles the library automation, computerization programmes and the management of the electronic resources.
Collection Development
The collection is enjoying a steady growth and are robust enough to support the Users’ needs. Generally, the collection which is a good mix of both basic and advanced text materials is assuming a moderate size that supports the research and learning needs of the academic staff and students of this University.
Electronic Resources
In addition to the prints, efforts had been made to subscribe to some Open Source electronic resources such as: JSTOR, INASP, DOAJ, AGORA, HINARI, MEDLINE, ABC of CHEMISTRY, African Digital Library, Bionline International, BioOne, African Index Medicus etc. As a project, the Library had and it is still compiling list of free but reputable online journals.
Presently, the Library subscribes to some fee based electronic databases (ebooks and ejournals) which were largely sourced through the annual TETFund Library Intervention. The following are currently being accessed by staff and students: Ebrary, MyiLibrary and EBSCOhost. These are invaluable electronic resources.
Library Services
The Library collections are open for loan by both staff and students. Other essential library services are equally provided: E-library, inter library loan, book reservation, reference services etc. Expanded services are being considered for implementation in due course.
